New Online Consumer Tool May Affect Reporting of Defective Products
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the launch of a new online reporting form designed to decrease the risk of injury or death resulting from use of defective or dangerous products.
January 20, 2012 /Law and Legal PR News/ -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the launch of a new online reporting form designed to streamline the reporting process. The CPSC states development of the form was sparked by requests from businesses. The form is designed to expedite the reporting process and decrease the risk of injury or death resulting from use of defective or dangerous products.
Part of a Larger Database
Commissioner Robert S. Adler of the CPSC clarified the process. He explained the development of a publicly searchable database in a recent statement. The new reporting form is available on this database, and the database is intended to provide manufacturers, retailers and consumers with real time information to "benefit the greater good of consumer safety."
Use of this database allows manufacturers to receive reports of complaints much more promptly. Conscientious manufacturers can implement the changes necessary to alleviate these complaints, and others can no longer state they were unaware of complaints.
New Online Reporting Form Has Disadvantages
Some manufacturers express concern over the increased availability of these forms leading to false complaints. Commissioner Adler addressed this concern by assuring the Commission would work to remove any inaccurate information. In addition, the manufacturer can file a claim with the CPSC if it feels a complaint is inaccurate. If the CPSC finds the claim has merit, they will remove the report.
Often, these safeguards are not enough and dangerous products remain available to consumers.
