Record Low Fatalities on Louisiana Roads Estimated for Fourth Straight Year
Louisiana had a record low number of traffic deaths in 2010, and a new record low is expected in 2011.

Louisiana's roads have never been busier, but fortunately they have also never been safer. Traffic deaths and overall accidents were both down in 2010; a record low of 720 people were killed in 147,543 overall traffic accidents. While the data is not yet official, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission estimates that only 647 total fatalities occurred in 2011. This again would be the lowest number since the LHSC began tracking data in 1984.
John Leblanc, executive director for the LHSC, told The Times-Picayune a combination of the following factors all contribute to improved traffic safety:
-Additional vehicle safety measures, such as higher crash ratings, airbags, child safety seats and a greater use of seatbelts
-Careful driving
-Education programs and safety campaigns
-Strict enforcement of traffic laws
Safety Campaigns Help
One prominent reason for the increased safety is state efforts to reduce common highway dangers. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission's "Click It or Ticket," "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Put It Down" campaigns promote awareness of using a seatbelt, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol and reducing distracted driving.
In 2010, 43 percent of all fatalities included alcohol, 58 percent were not wearing seatbelts, and data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 5,474 people died in fatal accidents related to distracted driving each year across the country. Distracted driving includes talking on a cell phone, eating and drinking, and texting.
While safety has dramatically improved in the last five years (nearly 1,000 traffic deaths occurred in Louisiana in 2006) accidents do, unfortunately, still happen. While the statistics are promising, 647 fatal traffic accidents are 647 too many.
