DUI Crackdown: Colorado State Patrol Ramping Up DUI Enforcement

DUI enforcement tends to ramp up around the holidays as more people attend parties, watch football on the weekends, and take time off from work. Read on to see what Colorado has planned for their holiday DUI crackdown.

December 11, 2011 /Law and Legal PR News/ -- DUI Crackdown: Colorado State Patrol Ramping Up DUI Enforcement

Colorado authorities increase their DUI enforcement efforts at select times each year. This is done during times when people are traditionally at risk of drinking and driving, such as the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween and the winter holidays. This year the Colorado State Patrol began its holiday crackdown on Thanksgiving and will continue to have increased patrols on duty through January 2.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is calling its campaign the "Heat is on Holiday DUI Crackdown," but the campaign is off to a rocky start. The CDOT reports that the Colorado State Patrol arrested and charged 435 individuals with DUI during the week of Thanksgiving -- nearly 75 more people than were arrested in 2010.

However, a major part of the campaign is to get people to plan a sober ride in advance. According to NBC, the CDOT has placed adds in bathroom stalls at bars, launched a new Facebook page dedicated to drunk driving awareness, and has purchased many billboards around major traffic areas to raise awareness of the increased enforcement. Therefore, while the State Patrol is doing its job by getting drunk drivers off of the road, the CDOT would much rather see fewer arrests and fewer drunk drivers on the road.

DUI/DWI Penalties

Drinking and driving is a mistake that even the most intelligent and well-respected individuals commit, and while DUIs are often one time occurrences, the effects of a conviction can be felt for years. As a result, it is important to obtain qualified legal counsel as soon as possible after being charged with a DUI to discuss your rights, your options, as well as the penalties you might face. Potential penalties for first time DUI offenders include:
-Up to one year in jail
-Community service
-Nine month license suspension
-Significant fines
-Alcohol treatment courses
-Court costs

These penalties, of course, depend upon the particular circumstances of your case. For example, if a person has a BAC above 0.20 or had a minor in his or her car, then the potential penalties increase.

If you are charged with a DUI it is important to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as you can. Mistakes happen, and everyone is entitled to fair representation throughout their case.
