Poignant Death of Child From I-90 Seattle-Area Pileup
A semi truck and logging truck collison on Interstate 90 in Washington sends seven people to the hospital with injuries.
September 29, 2011 /Law and Legal PR News/ -- Poignant Death of Child From I-90 Seattle-Area Pileup
Busy Interstate 90 through urban Bellevue, Washington, was the scene of a fearsome, fatal 15-vehicle accident during Wednesday morning rush hour on July 20, 2011. Accounts vary about the exact details of what happened that day.
Reportedly, a semi and a logging truck collided in westbound stop-and-go traffic. The logging truck separated from its rear axle, which crashed into other vehicles. The load of logs was knocked dangerously loose, with logs striking other vehicles as the truck moved through traffic. While the driver of the logging truck was praised for his handling of the heavy, crippled rig under the circumstances, the force of the two trucks' impact set off a chain reaction of collisions.
Traffic was stopped for more than six miles until the quarter mile of accident debris was cleared.
The semi was owned by AP Transport of Blaine, Washington. Several news sources point to a company record of serious state and federal truck safety violations. Apparently government officials have repeatedly ordered potentially dangerous AP trucks off the road. The possibility of faulty equipment was also being investigated in the AP semi involved in the Bellevue accident.
Early news accounts indicated that investigators did not suspect that driver intoxication was to blame.
Victim Rachel Beckwith
Seven people were hospitalized with injuries from the accident, including nine-year-old Rachel Beckwith. While the others were ultimately released, Rachel died from spinal, brain and pelvic damage.
Shortly before her death, Rachel had set up a birthday Web page asking for donations to the nonprofit organization charity: water. The group works to bring more safe drinking wells to developing nations. Rachel had raised $220 in her birthday campaign, but after her untimely death, news of her charitable goal spread to national and international news outlets, and gifts started pouring in through her page.
Earlier this year, singer Justin Bieber raised over $47,000 for the same nonprofit. Ironically, as of late September, over $1.2 million has been donated to the charity in Rachel Beckwith's memory by people in all corners of the globe.
Legal Assistance Essential
Anyone injured (or with a loved one injured or killed) in a motor-vehicle crash should contact an experienced, knowledgeable car accident attorney as soon as possible for advice about legal options. It can be important for a victim to initiate his or her own investigation with the help of a personal injury lawyer, especially in a major truck accident like the Bellevue pileup, where the trucking companies involved will likely mount vigorous defenses after their own expert investigations.
