Operation Yellow Jacket Surprises Speeders in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania state police have started Operation Yellow Jacket to catch more speeders.

The battle between speeders and police officers has taken a new turn in Pennsylvania due to Operation Yellow Jacket.
As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, in Operation Yellow Jacket, Pennsylvania state police officers dress in the yellow jackets worn by workers with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. They then hide in a Department of Transportation truck armed with their radar guns. The goal is a simple one: These police officers hope to surprise motorists who think it's safe to speed because they don't see a Pennsylvania state trooper's car parked anywhere nearby.
Needless to say, the operation has caught quite a few motorists by surprise. The Post-Gazette quoted one state trooper who compared catching speeding motorists to shooting fish in a barrel.
Typically, law enforcement officers focus their attention on highway work zones, where speed limits are lower and many motorists do not slow down. These construction sites are also where many accidents happen, with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation noting that 1,884 accidents occurred in construction zones in 2010.
The DOT has more than 100 construction projects taking place on state highways this year and police will be closely monitoring these sites under Operation Yellow Jacket. During one day of Operation Yellow Jacket enforcement at one construction site, state police handed out 45 speeding citations and two citations for other violations, the Post-Gazette reported. Police also handed out 52 warnings.
Though construction sites may be at the forefront of law enforcement's mind, they will be targeting speeders throughout the state. For some drivers, speeding charges can result in heavy fines, higher insurance premiums, and even the loss of their driver's license in some cases. But for others, including those who hold commercial driver's licenses, the charges can affect their ability to earn a paycheck. Motorists and truck drivers who are facing speeding and other traffic violations should discuss their case with an experienced attorney.
